Case Study / October 17, 2015
We recently finished a website redesign for The Great Race of Agoura Hills, which boasts some of Los Angeles' most scenic routes and a finish line party for the ages. The Great Race is actually a combination of six total races. There's two half marathons, the Pacific Half and the Chesebro Half; the Old Agoura 10K; the Deena Kastor 5K; a Kids One Mile; and a Family Fun Run.
Each of the races has a unique personality with beautiful routes. Even more unique, all of the races are on the same day and end by running through the same finish line.
When we searched around to see what other race websites were doing with regards to design we saw a lot of cookie cutter, blog theme websites. We knew we needed to find a way to make this Great Race stand out over those sites.
The challenge of this project was creating a site that encompasses the characteristics of all the different races in one design. What connects all of these races is the scenic routes, the finish line party, and the fun, family atmosphere. The best way to show these things is through big, impactful imagery. So that is the direction we went and never looked back.
Every page begins with a large image of the race. The home page leads with a subtle video playing in the background that changes with every visit to the site. This reinforces the experience of being part of the fun. We also built multiple custom page layouts. For example, the main page for each race creatively displays information for the route map, elevation, route turn points, and a video showing the highlights of each race.
Going one step further, we've made the entire site a responsive design. It looks beautiful and functional no matter what site of screen you're using.
The Great Race crew came to us because they were looking for something different than the other race websites. We took them through our process and couldn't be more excited about the end result. We'll see you at the finish line!
